scrivendo a suo fratello theo dal manicomio in Saint-Rémy all'inizio di luglio 1889 , van gogh ha descritto il suo ultimo lavoro nella serie che aveva iniziato a giugno : " Ho una tela di cipressi con alcune spighe di grano , alcuni papaveri , un cielo blu come un pezzo di plaid scozzese ; il primo dipinto con un impasto spesso . . . e il campo di grano al sole , che rappresenta il caldo estremo , anche molto spessa . " van gogh lo considerava sun-drenched paesaggio come uno dei suoi " migliore " tele estive , e ha riprodotto la composizione in un disegno a penna ( museo van gogh , Amsterdam ) e in due varianti in pittura ad olio ( galleria nazionale , Londra , e collezione privata ) .
